Build Season (“Build Season,” “we,” “us”) operates a self-paced online program (27 lessons, about 13 hours) for students ages 11–17, run by their parents or legal guardians. This policy applies to our public website and to the logged-in program. It is written for a general audience first; the Children’s Privacy section adds the specific protections that apply to student information.
Our three pledges
These hold across this entire policy and the whole program:
- We never sell personal information.
- We never show ads inside the program.
- We never use your child’s data to train AI models.
Who this covers
The parent or legal guardian is our customer and the person who creates the account, enrolls a student, and pays. The studentuses the program under that account. We treat all student information as children’s information, including for students who are 13 or older.
Information we collect from parents
- Account information: parent name, email address, password.
- Billing information: handled by Stripe. We receive a record of the charge and the last four digits of the card; we never see or store full card numbers.
- Consent records: a timestamp, your IP address at the time of consent, the version of the notice you agreed to, and the related Stripe payment identifier.
- Optional safety-alert contact: a mobile number, only if you opt in at checkout to receive urgent safety text messages.
- Support messages you send us, and basic technical logs from the public website.
How we use information
- To run the program and show parents their student’s progress.
- To keep students safe (moderation, crisis response, and review).
- To process enrollment and handle refunds.
- To send parents account, progress, and safety messages. Marketing emails to parents always include an unsubscribe link. We send safety text messages only with your express opt-in consent.
- To meet legal, tax, and child-safety obligations.
We do not use information for advertising, profiling for ads, or selling. We do not run third-party advertising trackers inside the logged-in program.
Service providers (processors)
We share information only with the service providers that run our platform, under contracts that limit them to acting on our instructions. We do not disclose personal information to third parties for their own purposes, and never for advertising or AI training.
| Provider | What they do |
|---|---|
| Vercel | Website and application hosting |
| Supabase | Database, authentication, and file storage |
| Stripe | Payment processing for enrollment |
| Anthropic | The Claude AI model that powers Coach, our study tool |
| Resend | Sending account and progress emails to parents |
Cookies and trackers
The public website uses only the cookies needed to make it work, plus limited analytics and advertising measurement that runs on the public, parent-facing pages. The logged-in program, and any page a student can reach, carries zero third-party trackers: no advertising pixels, no cross-site analytics, no behavioral profiling. We use a persistent session identifier inside the program only to keep a student logged in and secure (see Children’s Privacy below).
Children's Privacy (students ages 11–17)
Build Season is designed for children. The U.S. Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) gives parents specific rights over the information of children under 13. We extend the same protections to every student in the program, including those 13 and older. We are COPPA-compliant by design.
What we collect from your child
We collect only the minimum needed to run the program. We do not condition your child’s participation on providing more than this.
| Category | Why we collect it |
|---|---|
| First name and last initial | To address the student and label their work inside the program. |
| Birth month and year | To confirm eligibility (ages 11–17) and set the correct age-appropriate experience. |
| Username | So the student can log in under the parent’s account. |
| Coursework and projects the student creates | To deliver the program, grade work, and show parents progress. |
| Conversations with Coach (our AI study tool) | To answer the student’s questions, keep them safe, and let parents review the conversations. |
We do notcollect a student email under 13, phone number, home address, school, photographs, faces, precise location, or full date of birth. Public project pages and the Showcase never display a student’s face, full name, or school, and student project websites use the venture or brand name — never the student’s name — in their web address.
Persistent identifiers and internal operations
Inside the program we use a persistent session identifier solely to support our internal operations — keeping a student securely logged in, maintaining the security and integrity of the service, and preventing abuse. We do not use it to build advertising profiles, track students across other sites, or for any purpose beyond running and protecting the service.
We do not disclose your child’s information
We do not disclose children’s personal information to third parties except the service providers listed above that run our platform, and we never use it for advertising or AI training. Because we never disclose it for advertising or other third-party purposes, the separate opt-in for such disclosures does not apply to us.
We never sell data, never show ads, never train AI on your child’s data
We never sell your child’s personal information. We never show advertising inside the program. We never use your child’s data — including their projects and their conversations with Coach — to train AI models, and our AI provider does not train its models on it either.
How long we keep it
We publish our retention schedule and our automated deletion jobs follow it:
| Data | We keep it | Then |
|---|---|---|
| Coach (AI study tool) transcripts — unflagged | 90 days after enrollment | Permanently deleted |
| Safety-flagged transcripts | 12 months from the flag | Permanently deleted |
| Student artifacts and projects | 12 months after enrollment (or sooner on request) | Permanently deleted |
| Child profile (first name + last initial, birth month/year, username) | 24 months after the account is last active, or sooner on request | Permanently deleted |
| Parent consent and billing records | 7 years (legal and tax requirements) | Deleted when the retention period ends |
| Encrypted backups | Rolling 30 days | Purged automatically |
Your rights as a parent
At any time — not only during the refund window — you can, from your Parent Dashboard:
- Review the personal information we have collected from your child, including their Coach conversations.
- Deleteyour child’s personal information.
- Withdraw your consentand stop any further collection or use. Withdrawing consent deletes your child’s data and ends their participation.
These rights are always available and are separate from our refund policy. Withdrawing consent or deleting data does not by itself trigger a refund; a refund is available only inside the refund window described in our Terms of Service. You can also email us at hello@buildseason.camp and we will help.
For more detail on how we keep students safe and how AI is used, see our Safety page and the COPPA Direct Notice.
How we protect information
We maintain a written security program for children’s data. It includes a named security coordinator, database-level access isolation so one family can never reach another family’s data, encryption in transit and at rest, least-privilege access for our systems, a rule against putting student personal information in logs or analytics, and a breach-response plan. We review the program at least once a year. No system is perfectly secure, but we take this seriously.
Where this applies
Build Season is offered to families located in the United States only. We do not knowingly enroll students or accept information from outside the United States.
Changes to this policy
If we make a material change to how we handle children’s information, we will notify parents and, where the law requires it, obtain renewed consent before the change takes effect. The “last updated” date above always reflects the current version.
